Montlake Kiddie Corral

The Montlake Ale House is a pub where you can go and watch your favorite Word Cup match, have a pint of beer… and bring your kid!  This place looks great, and I was going to wait until I personally check it out to do this, but I didn’t want anyone to miss out.  I will do a better review after I check it out.

Anyway, I searched for some games I really like.  Dodgeball, and soccer.  I found both.  I found a bunch of dudes that play dodgeball every Tuesday and Friday night up in Seattle.  It’s a little far, but I feel like it will be fun.  I had to miss the Tuesday match, because of the ping pong.  Bur Friday night at Cal Anderson Park, it’s on.  And then I found a outdoor, Soccer Team that needs a goalie, they play on Sundays… I played last in high school in 97.  But I have played off and on, indoor style.  It should be an adventure… God I hope that my keeper skills haven’t deteriorated as much as my body has.  I will let ya know how things go.

Have you ever thought you were really good at something, then found out you were not… heart breaking isn’t it?  Hope I’m not setting myself up for a beating.

The Normandy Park Swim Club is an outdoor pool and super awesome fun spot.  It has a full size pool and diving board, a kiddy pool with fountains, a amazing big toy and swings, pickle-ball corts, ping pong tables, a clubhouse and kitchen, tons of those outdoor heaters, for nighttime fun, and BBQs.  This place is amazing, there are tons of kids for the kids to play with, and tons of really cool family’s to make friends with.  You can bring a cooler packed with all the food and drink you want, and hang out at the pool for the day… you can even bring beer and drinks!!

My master plan was to spend every day here, and make a ton of new friends… but this weather is destroying my plan.  We have been trying to make the most of it, even going on rainy days… the pool’s heated, and there are lots of big umbrellas and covered areas.  Joining the pool, I am sure was a awesome thing to do, and I am sure that we are going to make a ton of new friends… I just hope the sun comes out sometime soon.

My  2 year old daughter starts swim lessons this week… rain or shine.  It’s supposed to rain… big surprise.  Don’t you just love living in Seattle.

Nope!

1. Turn the house into a fort-  you can always find some stuff to do at home., make a fort out of couch cushions, put blankets all over the place, play hide and go seek.
2. Try potty training- got nothing else to do?  Why not get the whole potty thing training thing over and done with.(Requires lots of rainy days… luckily we have lots of thoese
3. Go to the Seattle Aquarium- this is sure to make for a great day.  Lots of fun stuff for the kids to look at, and even tide pools where they can touch marine life.  There is lots to do down on the Seattle Waterfront.
4. Seattle Chilerens Museum- way too much to list for the kids, so visit the site.  Its at the Seattle Center and there is so much to do, that you cant do it all in a day.
5. Seattle Science Center- way more fun for you… but your kids of all ages are sure to find lots of stuff to make them happy.  It always good to get them interested in science and fun educational stuff… plus it brings us back to your nerdy self.  You know that you have been sitting around watching the Science and History channel… go eat some astronaut ice cream, I love it.
6. Seattle Art Museum- Fun for the entire family, and they have some really good kids programs.  Its always free for kids under 13, and free for everyone on the first Thursday of the month
7. Play In It-  Get the kids in their galoshes and head outside.  Saltwater State Park in Des Moines is a fun place to go exploring in tide pools and there are lots of walking trails
8. Go To the Movies- Take the kids to a movie on a weekday during the day.  Usually there is no one there to be bothered by your noisy little kids… not that we care.
9. Walk the Mall-  waste a few hours walking around the mall, most big malls have a children’s play area, and its always good to get the kids playing with others… plus they will be tired from walking and fall asleep in the car on the way home, and you can just carry them to bed.
10. Visit Grandmas- cant find anything else to do… go visit your mom or some family members.  You know that they always want to see the babies, and you can even score some free lunch or a babysitter for a hour or so, and you can have a little time to yourself.

At All Star Sports Bar in Des Moines, Ping Pong is no joke… the players here, for the most part are super good.  There is even a regular player that has actualy written a book on ping pong stuff.  The food is really, really good, and the bar is big.  The best part is that this bar, that is by no means huge… has over TWENTY FLAT SCREENS.  This place is great for sports, there is a TV in every place that one will fit.

Here is a video of a band that played at All Star Sports Bar in Des Moines

First of all, you have to get all ready and get the diapers changed before heading out, and that usually takes a few minutes, and sure enough… as soon as you get them both changed, one of them has a diaper blowout and you need to do a whole outfit change.  Then you need to change the other ones diaper again before finally getting all loaded up into the car.

So you get to the store and the baby is sleeping and the toddler is going out soon.  Since the baby was sleeping, I kept him in the car seat and tossed him in the basket of the cart (the Orbit car seat is weird and wont fit on the top like most car seats do).  This took up the entire cart and there was no room for the toddler seat, so she had to walk.  Unfortunately she was out cold and I had to carry her, and drag the shopping cart, stuffing groceries around the side of the seat.

When I got to the check outline… I realized that I must have left my wallet at home, so I abandoned the cart and took off.

A few hours later after nap time, I tried for round two.  I had only one request from my wife… her special shavers.  The first store that I went to didn’t have them so I just said fuck it, left, and went to another store.  That store didn’t have them either (time for a new brand).

Anyway, I spent all day going to the store… next time I am just ordering in from Safeway.com.  They deliver.

The lesson here is…

wait until the wife comes home, and then go to the store or just don’t go… until i possess the multitasking skills.

From Seattle, if you drive, its about two hours… or you can take the Ferry over.  Thats what we did, and it was awesome.  The view of the Olympic Mountains and the whole Puget Sound and Seattle city views are amazing.  Our little girl loved the ferry and loved going outside and enjoying the sites.

The Olympic Game Farm in Sequim, Wa is super fun.  We stopped at a store and picked up some wheat bread (thats all you can feed the animals), and went to zoo.  IT WAS SUPER FUN.  All I can say is that you need to watch this video of our trip.  ENJOY

What are we supposed to do?  You know that horrible time I am talking about. Full On Temper Tantrum.   Your at the store, and you want to get a remote control car, so you can chase the little monster around the house.  Then you “unknowingly” pass the to baby doll section.  She grabs all the babies she can carry, and runs.  You know your in for it.  So you ditch the toy car and head out, like a destroyer of fun and dreams as you take the dolls away.

Now you did it.  The limp noodle (your kid) falls to the floor, yelling, kicking, screaming… it not like you can reason with this person (at least I haven’t learned how to yet… if you know, tell me… please) , shes only 18 months old.  Here are your options

1. Let her cry it out on the floor.
2. Apologize and admit your wrong doing and giver her all the babies
3. Just look around and say “its not my kid, and run away”
4. Trick her by giving her one of the dolls back, continuing your shopping trip, and taking the doll away right before you check out, only to cause the monster to erupt in anger, then buy the toy, apologize to her for your stupidity and be on your way?

I choose 4.  Sometimes I just cave in because its easier.  I know that this is not the right thing to do… but I’m working on it.  So I decided ask around.  But the people that i asked are OUR parents and grandparents.   The answers I got… well, they were not the answers i was looking for.  Spanking, strap, abandonment, squirted with water… on and on… not my style.

I found lots of good articles online in forums and parenting sites.  So here is what I am going to try on the next set of tantrums

At Home

1. Calmly take the kid somewhere safe, like their room, or crib… as long as it is somewhere safe, where she can be left alone.
2. If she cant be left alone, stay with her, but ignore her… don’t even make eye contact
3. Don’t come back until she has calmed down, and then have a calm talk with her.  Tell her that her behavior is not acceptable, and go over her actions… ” you were kicking and screaming, and throwing things, and that is not good.  Do this so that she knows what she did that was wrong
4. Apparently kids undertand more than we think, so its ok to talk to them like adults…apparently (that’s what the behavior authorities on line say)

This should help the kids to understand and learn from their behavior.  Getting mad, yelling at them, and giving in will just mess them up in the long run, so I guess I can’t do that.

Out and About

1. Get out of the public area if its possible, head to the car and strap her in the car seat if you can.  Just wait it out until she calms down.
2. Have that nice little talk about her behavior again
3. Go back to whatever we were doing

But what if you cant get out of public?

1. On the buss, train, or worse…airplane.   This is really tough… you cant do jack s@#t.  Just hold on for the ride.  Try as hard to ignore the kid as you can.  Whats going to be even harder, is trying to ignore people looking at you… but don’t give in.  Maybe try locking them in the bathroom, or overhead compartment (kidding)… I don’t know.
2. When the kid calms down, have that little talk again.

As soon as we arrived at the place i scanned for other babies… there were none. But i did see some high chairs, so they must be somewhat tolerant of babies. Luckily, Marley is a really good baby, and I didn’t think that she would be too much of a distraction for the other patrons. She did a really good job.
But I think that it was in part to our careful preparation.
When taking the baby to a nice restaurant, there are some things that you can to help make the evening better for everyone.
1. Make sure that the baby is well rested, sleepy babies are fussy and hard to keep happy
2. Have some food for them to eat as well. This will keep them feeling like part of the group, and not be ignored
3. Have a Perimeter Place Mat- I made one of these out of vinyl. This is basically a piece of plastic that you can put in front of your baby, partly to keep the table somewhat clean, but mostly to keep everything away from the baby. Waiters don’t usually know how far the baby can reach. This mat, will take the guess work out, and the table clean.
4. Tether everything to the high chair so that when the baby tosses stuff to the ground, it wont get lost.
5. Suction Cup Toys, are great for entertaining the little ones, and will keep the entertained for a whale
